What is an adult...

Authors note: In class we had this assignment but I really liked it because it allowed me to really think about something that I normally don't think about. I really focused in on the concept "age is just a number" because I had a very different idea on what an adult was. I also decided to go to m-w.com and look up adult. This is what I found, adult : fully developed and mature : grown-up. This really made me think...

Being an adult has nothing to do with what age you are. The old saying “age is just a number” is beyond true. There are some people who grow up have a kid and are forced to be adults at a very young age. It doesn’t necessarily mean that’s right, but it does mean that they have to mature and grow up a lot faster than others. A person’s life experiences it what makes the decision if they are an adult or not.
Some kids grow up with rich parents and never have to work. They get everything handed to them and don’t have to ever ‘want’ because they get everything. Well, one day those kids won’t live with their parents anymore and will have to find a job to make their own money and suddenly reality will hit them. In my opinion, those are the kind of kids that will take longer to become adults because they are being babied all the way through high school.
Then, there are the kids that get jobs at the age of 16 and work so hard just to live the average life. They become adults faster because they have already been working and know what it’s like to want things that you can’t have. I believe that these kids will become more successful in the long run because they will have all the experience that they need at a young age.
Age is literally just a number and I can’t even imagine how many 18 year olds there are that shouldn’t be treated as ‘adults’. Many highschoolers should be treated as adults because we really have been through a lot, even though not everyone knows that.
